Old and New Money: Central Park and Fifth Avenue 1538 CourseCatalog/images/new.gif

Social status in New York City today is primarily determined by wealth rather than pedigree, but that was not always the case. At the turn of the century, the Old Money of New York began to settle along the eastern side of Central Park - Fifth Avenue - to build classic mansions of distinction. By contrast, the New Money - unwelcome on Fifth Avenue - formed its own community on the other side of the park - Central Park West. They decided to reject the traditions of the Old Money, building instead the first luxury apartment buildings and embracing a less classis style. Join us on a walking tour of the two grand boulevards of wealth, with sites that show the differences between these well-to-do Victrian communities in terms of architecture, social graces, and the professions of those that live there. Stops include the Dakota, The Prasada, the the Payne Whitney, Harry Sinclair, James Duck and Henry Clay Frick mansions. Trip includes motorcoach transportation, group leader, tour and all gratuities. Tour starts at Ukrainian Society, corner of 79th Street and Fifth Avenue at 11:00 am. Ends at 1:00 pm at 64th Street and Central Park West. There will be time on your own at nearby Lincoln Center and Time Warner Center at 10 Columbus Circle. Restaurants in the area: Lincoln Center Kitchen, The Grand Tier, American Table, Atlantic Grill, Rosa Mexicano, Cafe Fiorello, PJ Clarke's, The Smith, Boulud Sud (google search for more). The bus will depart NYC approximately at 3:00 pm and return to commuter lot at approximately 6:00 pm

Cost for trips is non-refundable.
