Erie Canal Cruise, NY 1494

Take a trip through history on the calm waters of the Erie Canal and enjoy the spectacular scenery of New York's beautiful Mohawk Valley. For 90-minutes on board one of the Lil' Diamond vessels, your US Coast Guard licensed captain entertains with tales of the canal; why it was known as Clinton's ditch, how it was constructed, and how it opened and why it was expanded and why it is still important to upstate New York culture. The tour passes through massive guard gates and the historic Fort Herkimer Church, which is one of the oldest surviving churches in New York state. The vessel then enters Lock 18 at Jacksonburg, one of the last remaining locks operating with all original 100-year old equipment. Your captain will fully describe how the lock operates. The vessel enters the lock, the gates close behind and suddenly but smoothly the lock house seems to rise in the air as slimy walls creep up along the vessel while being lowered 20 feet. This is an experience not soon forgotten. A buffet lunch will be served at the Waterfront Grille, a casual dining spot located at th e Herkimer Marina. Sample menu: oven roasted turkey; fresh baked Virginia ham, mashed potatoes; stuffing and gravy; tossed green salad, hot garlic bread, General Herkimer's Family Apple Crisp; and coffee, tea or soda. There will be time for shopping at Gems Along the Mohawk. Trip includes motor coach transportation, group leader, cruise and lunch.

Cost for trips is non-refundable but transferable to another person. Everyone must pay the full price, no discounts apply.
