Grief and the Lyric Essay 2508 CourseCatalog/images/new.gif

Have you ever wondered what form grief can take in writing? What is it about hybrid or experimental writing the intrigues us? For some writers, it is a vehicle that provides an acces point to emotional depth in their work. For others, experimental writing is a way to expose injustice, social or otherwise, or to give voice to the unspeakable. What does hybrid writing offer us that traditional creative nonfiction sometimes cannot? In the first half of the seminar, we wll look at and discuss how grief disrupts, enhances, and shows up in the lyric for writers like Kate Zambreno, Lia Purpura, Maggie Nelson, Eula Biss, Stephen Kuusisto, and Roland Barthes. We will discuss the relationship between punctuation, style, sound, and metaphor and simile, among others. We will then move on to discuss the relationship between content and form and how they work together to create movement in prose. We will discuss ways in which hybrid writing works in the absence of traditional CNF techniques. We will also examine an except from Cheryl Stayed's memoir, Wild, to illuminate the striking differences beween grief in memoir versus grief in lyric. During the second half of the seminar, we will circle up to do some hybrid/experimental or lyric/fragment writing based on our own personal grief-filled or difficult experiences through writing prompts and free writing exercises. We will then read some of our pieces out loud (optional) and discuss how the writing reflects the experience, and how form and content are in conversation with each other. Open to writers of all levels and genres. Suggested reading: Wild by Cheryl Strayed, Mourning Diary by Roland Barthes, Book of Mutter by Kate Zambreno, On Looking by Lia Purpura and Bluets by Maggie Nelson.
